b 1894 "The Iliad of Homer" translated by Edward Smith-Stanley, Earl of Derby. 2 volumes; Fifth edition

Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby, also known as Lord Derby, provided a translation of Homer's "Iliad."

"Jove bids me bid the gory combat cease,
And wipe the slaughter from the fields of Greece."

This line reflects the divine intervention of Zeus (Jove) in the ongoing battle, signaling a temporary halt to the conflict in Homer's epic poem. Lord Derby's translation is recognized for its poetic and accessible rendition of the classical work.
